DesignER Research
Abidur Chowdhury is a San Francisco, California based industrial designer who currently works with Apple. He is a 'first class honours' graduate (high academic percentile) from Loughborough University in England for Product Design. Prior to designing for Apple, Chowdhury has worked with many consulting agencies in the UK (clients for multinational companies and local start-ups) as well as had some entrepreneurial experience with clients of his own. He has won a total of six design awards mostly for his product, AER, including being the winner of a week long competition (2017) and selected (with 7 others) for a Bursary.
My work mainly revolves around visual arts and graphic design but Chowdhury's designs inspire me to further explore industrial design. This is mainly because of the time and effort he puts into his rough work and the Design Process. I believe every piece of design should have a purpose, be properly researched for, and drafted multiple times before being satisfied with the end result. Chowdhury has clearly demonstrated that he believes in this as well. On his website (http://www.abidurchowdhury.com/), he has tons of sketches that capture his thinking behind his products-experimentation of how the final result would, not only look like, but also feel and how efficient it would be for the consumer. That, to me, makes a great industrial designer stand out from the rest. I strive to plan out all the details like him when I come up with my own ideas.

I've observed, while following his work, that each of Chowdhury's designs contribute to the society somehow, whether it is environmentally or in terms of medicine. This makes me admire him and his products even more. Products that have multiple uses/benefits to them, yet are designed well, are the most successful in my opinion. I will definitely try to incorporate this into my future projects.

I'm also very attracted to his use of minimalism and the simplicity of the colours he uses to enhance the overall experience of the product. It makes daily-use items appealing to use. This will be an inspiration for me in my design portfolio as well.
